Societies and politics of the Middle East in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Topics include the Islamic and Ottoman legacies; reforms and reforming elites; changing roles of religion; nationalist ideologies; Great Power intervention; regional politics; and the Arab-Israeli conflict.
